Old Pins

Ok...the current pins we are are...okay.  My cast (Xi Delta at Wingate University) lovingly call them our APO coasters.  I'm very intrigued by the old ones though...they look more like a Greek organizations.  Anyone know why we made the switch to something so "high school" looking?  I imagine probably cost...If it's not too much more, my cast would prefer the old ones back.

Speaking of...I found an old APO jewelry order from from the early 90s when those pins were still in use.  I know that it is L. G. Balfour that used to make them (they now make class rings).  I'd bet they still have the casts for the pins in storage..is it worth pursuing?

The old pins were made by the Balfour Company from Massachusetts.  Nice people.  But they got bought up by a conglomerate which promptly went belly up and took Balfour's with them.  The old patterns and dies disappeared in the process.  The National Officers went looking for a new national jeweler and got some horrifying cost estimates from the other fraternity jewelers - so they went for the cloisonne "blue moon" pin to keep from more than doubling the pin cost.

More recently some chapters have been dickering with local jewelers who have been suggesting the old style pins can be made for less than an arm, a leg and a first born child, but I have yet to hear if anyone's gone forward with the idea.

My chapter really wants to go back to the old pin.  I wrote Dr. Jones about it and he never responded.  I checked with one jeweler here (my cousin's place) and he quoted me a rediculous price to make the molds for them.  So I dunno...
