In for a long haul... HELP?
06/23/05 at 19:37:55

Hello all,
I am a new user and first year member to APO at Umaine at Farmington.
Our cast is... to say it frankly... hardly worth mentioning.
I have been voted the VP for the fall semester and will most likely be the Director for the spring.
Since I joined (and so I hear, before) the cast has been struggling to find some sort of direction, purpose, and reason for existence. One of the main roadblocks the group faces is that TUMF, the theatre club, of which I am the VP, handles most of the Theatre. This includes budget and fundraising. Pretty much all that our cast does is usher (sometimes) for shows and provide consession (again, only sometimes) as a fundraisor, but we do nothing we the money.

My goal is to lead the group into a cohesive unit that is not stepping on the toes of TUMF.

I have some ideas but am not sure of what is appropriate.

These include special projects for the theatre (fundraising to provide for curtain repair, shop needs, costume, aesthetics, etc) . Leading other students who were not cast in the current plays or who are techs etc in a weekly improvisation workshop to work on technique. and lastly taking monthly trips.

Thats all I could come up with, unfortunatly I have been doing all this brainstorming on my own, as the cast is extremely disjointed, and have had no sense of direction myself.

I realise this is a huge task and is going to require alot of attention, so I thank everyone in advance for their time and help...

Sounds like a similar situation with many Casts who are operating alongside a non-Greek-Honor-Society theatre club.

You've got a few good ideas.  I would really check into raising money for the department for whatever things it needs.  The purpose of Alpha Psi Omega is service to theatre, so that can fulfill that need right there.

I'd suggest doing concessions and ushering regularly.  It gets your members out there and seen.

Here are somethings that bound the Lambda Nu Cast into doing things:
1.) Pie-in-the-Face - it's a cheap, fun fundraiser.  I'd recommend doing this if your college is involved in ACTF.  You can raise money for students going to the Regional Festival.

2.) A fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.  We did a Womanless Beauty Pageant with a raffle.  It could work for your Cast, too.

3.) A Winter Social Get-together (like a small dance)

4.) Canned-Food-Drive.

5.) A New Play Festival Showcase/Night of One-Acts - Produced by APO and done completely by students.

Other things you might do are having Movie Nights, Open-Mic Improv Nights, Guerilla Theatre, Making Department T-shirts or Hats, and other things like that.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

sorry I have been absent, I have limited access to computers during the summer.

All of that sounds great, my main concern, however, with taking on the fundraising for the theatre is getting the theatre club all worked up and feeling as if we are trying to take over. Looking for outside aid programes may be something that our troupe may be more comfortable with- at leaste at first.

Thanks again!

Well, if you're mainly concerned about upsetting people in the other theatre group, I'd get together with the leaders of that group (if it has any, that is).  You could discuss what would be the best course of action.

Maybe the theatre group raises money for actors in the department, while APO covers donations to the technical budgets?

Just a thought.  Hope it helps.

and on a personal note - WOO HOO!! 100 posts!
