Twenty-Four Hour Theatre
10/24/02 at 14:32:32

Greetings.  I wanted to share a tradition that the Alpha Psi Omega, Kappa Epsilon Cast has at Bradley University in Peoria, IL.  Every year, around Halloween, we get together and have 24HR as one of our fundraisers.

What is 24HR you ask?  Well, according to the program for this year's event, it's this:

24 Hour Theatre is a unique, creative opportunity for Bradley theatre students to write, direct, act, build, light and collaborate to mount a full-fledged production in 24 hours.  The first 24 Hour Theatre was produced at Bradley University on October 31, 1998 and has since become an annual event for the lab theatre and Alpha Psi Omega.

In ordinary terms, 24HR is this:
At 7:00 p.m. Friday night a group of 2-3 writers get together and start writing a script.  At the same time, the designers and actors meet in another location so they can be consulted on ideas for the script.  By 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning the script has been finished and copied.  We then have the first read through, and designs and memorizations commence.  9:00 a.m. Saturday morning rehearsals start.  At 7:00 p.m. Sunday night, we have a performance.  This means that within 24 hours we have written and put together and entire 15-30 minute show! Cheesy

Maybe your cast can give it a try!Wink

We've gotten the final totals from 24HR and we made over $200 for our cast.  Not bad for 2 20-minute performances. Grin

FYI, that was at $3.00 a seat, in case your cast wanted to try it and wanted to know how much to charge.  We've found that college students don't mind spending $3.00 on something that they're not sure about... Tongue

This sounds remarkably similar to RPI's "Theatre Slam" Smiley This is also a full theatre production done in a little over 24 hours. When I took part in The Player's last one it was quite the experience. We had a lot of fun and got no sleep  Wink it was FANTASTIC!

It sounds like so much fun to do!  Our cast did it a couple times before I was initiated but unfortunately it didn't do well ):  Our school is so small and there's so much apathy toward everything, especially theatre ):  I'd still like to do it just for the fun of it, even if we don't earn anything but I'm overruled Wink

24 hour theater is one of our favorite APO traditions here at the Gamma Eta Cast at Lenoir-Rhyne! We do ours a little differently though, first of all we start at midnight so our performance is of course at midnight which is always quite hilarious I think, and always means we have a bit more fun as by that time we're all completely exhausted. Also I don't think we've ever charged admission, I do love the idea though, in previous years 24hour theater's always been just a bonding thing, not even necessarily just APO which is great because it beings in people from the community who may or may not have any idea about theater and the work that goes into every show!
