National Traditions

Greetings to all Alpha Psi brothers and sisters.  We have reactived the Zeta Epsilon cast and, since, I have little contact with alumni, I'd like to hear some of APO's traditions.  I have heard of the handshake, and  a little on the coat-of-arms, but little else.  If any of you have information, you can email me at actormanAPO@hotmail.com.   I'm particularly interested in national traditions, but local traditions are welcome as well.  Mottos, reasons why we do things in the pledge period, etc., anything that you know of will be welcome.  Thanks brothers and sisters.

Now and Forever,

Brad Oxnam

I would also LOVE to find out about National and Local traditions. I am VP of the Jacksonville University chapter. Our alums let our chapter get into bad standing and we are trying to fix it now. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for fundraisers (we have to raise money for all the alums since 1997, when they stopped paying dues) email me at thdju@hotmail.com. Thanks!

We have a handshake?!?!  Well what do you know!  I'm the president of the Beta Iota cast at Valparaiso University.  We are slowly in the process of cleaning up the cobwebs on a chapter that has been active, but certainly not well organized for...well..let's not embarass ourselves.  Where can I get info on our history and ritual?  Our new pledges need to know this, not to mention our present cast!

Also, if anyone has a really great pledge education program and would like to share tips, please drop me a line! chitadenita@hotmail.com

Peace,

Hi! I'm in the process of re-activating Virginia Tech's Alpha Psi Omega chapter and this Friday (oh yeah, that would be tomorrow!) and I have a lot of people asking me what our proud unifiers are for the Fraternity and really this is all I have heard from other webpages, but I am in the desperate process of trying to find out more info about our symbols, traditions, etc.  I think they are things we should definately continue and be proud of... like the traditions of theatre! ANYWAY this is all I know of, are they right?
Motto: Seek a life useful: seek to become humble artists by the one and only road of labor and service.
Flower: Violet and Rose
Animal: ??? (Please can someone tell me what it is??? This is a major issue debate for us right now, We've heard anything from goat, leopard, owl, crow, pig, cat, snake, deer, lion... We've got to have something we can wear around on shirts with pride for our craft!)
Colors: Midnight Blue and Amber
Patron God: Dionysus
Crest: An Ancient Greek Theatre
Magazine: Playbill
That's all I know, I hope someone will reply to me! Thanks!

This is my first time on the bulletin board and I definetely think that we should ALL know about the traditions of our organization. It would be great if the national officers could relate that information to the rest of us, I'm also in a chapter that is trying to rebuild itself and make it greater than what it was. I know someone knows the traditions and for the organization to be functioning as long as it has someone knows.  Grin Anyway it is nice to hear that my chapter, the Mu Eta Cast isn't the only one's in the dark.

i'm a member of a cast that's in the process (and boy is it a long slow hard road) to reactivation. the five of us who were initiated in december we taught the secret handshake at the end of our final ceremony by our big brothers (who are form the delta xi cast) and a helpful friend from the nu iota cast at hartwick (delta xi is at RPI btw) it's kinda hard to describe what it is but there are some resources as to where to learn it. of course we're all in upstate new york so that might be difficult for some, but we love visitors out here  Wink  as for other traditions and such i'm not sure if i know them all but a great resouce for that is charles chapman at the lambda omega cast (he's their advisor) he might actually know everything there is to know about alpha psi omega!

I've been watching this topic with interest for some time now.  I've been an APO member since 1983 and have never heard of a secret handshake nor a goat mascot.  As a faculty member attempting to reactivate a long inactive chapter on my campus, I suspect that each cast may develop some its own traditions. Is it possible that some of the things mentioned on this board/topic are exactly that?  Individual cast traditions that have gotten blurred over time?  I do know one tradition our cast, the Phi Nu cast, intends to keep and follow:  that of wearing Alpha Psi cords for graduation.  It's one way our students can express their pride in their work, their achievements, and their fraternity.  Best of broken legs to all casts and members.

Our local tradition at Winthrop (Delta Mu) was to have pledges wear yellow ribbons until they were initiated, and then switch to blue.  But someone said at some point we had gotten that reversed - and we were actually supposed to be doing it the other way around.  But, since it was already a local tradition...

Anyone know any current Winthrop members?  I have a sinking feeling that APO is going down with the ship down there, but I'm afraid to ask.

Oh, and if anyone ever figures out the handshake, let me know.

Hello Brothers,

I hail as a new alumna from Nu Iota at Hartwick College.

A correction on an earlier post, our colors are Moonlight Blue and Amber, not midnight.  And yes, we have a secret handshake well steeped in stagecraft but it's not something I think those of us that know would like to share in a public forum, lacking the "secret."  I would suggest sending Charlie Chapman of Lambda Omega over at SUCO an email, I'm sure he'd be glad to share it with you.

And Nu Iota is proud to welcome SUNY New Paltz's newly rechartered Kappa Lambda cast.

Any other questions, feel free to post.

Well, umm, I mean that is to say I think I have the same questions as everyone else on this topic... I was just elected president of the Lambda Rho Cast at the Univ. of Central Oklah. and I'd love for any email from anyone about anything at all regarding Alpha Psi especially on traditions, goats, and secret handshakes... ok maybe not the goat... but everything else...     waiting for a reply,

Justin

Hey there Brothers and Sisters,
There are a few symbols, traditions etc. that our cast learned from the Nu Iota cast.

<content removed to keep society traditions secret>

I'm sure there are some things that I've forgotten to write at this moment.  But if you have questions I'll be glad to try and help.  Chrissy- VP of Kappa Lambda Cast at SUNY New Paltz Kiss

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

I am a Past President of Pi Zeta Cast (1980-1981) of Saint Francis College (Brooklyn), and would be delighted to teach you the old secret handclasp, referred to as "Stagehand's Grip."

If you go to the old bulletin board, you will see many previous posts regarding traditions of the Fraternity that I posted, as well as the secret handclasp.

As it is secret, my dear Brothers and Sisters, I shan't post it on the board, so that the uninitiated can learn it.

Please e-mail me directly, and advise me of your Cast affiliation and date of initiation. I shall take you at you word of honor as a gentleman or a lady that you are a Brother or Sister of Alpha Psi Omega, and I shall e-mail you the instructions on how to perform the secret handclasp.

I remain fraternally yours, Now and Forever, the Blue and Amber.

Brother Denis "Doc" McGowan
