You'll want to sign up for the Theatre Sound Mailing List (if you haven't already)

http://www.brooklyn.com/theatre-sound/

This is practically a weekly topic on there, dig through the archives for LOTS of good advice. The people giving the advice tend to be the people who wrote the book, it doesn't get any better.

(It's neat to see posts like: "Anyone here know who is currently mixing for the touring company of Phantom?" and having someone reply: "That would be me.")

Okay, I'm looking to get a masters or doctorate in Theatre History (or something along those lines. i do not want to do design at all.) from a university that is close to cincinatti. the closer the better, but i could deal with up to 200 miles. i guess i can deal with as much as it takes, but within 200 miles is preferred. are there any suggestions? i'm not having luck finding anything.

Brad -

There are lots of excellent MFA programs in the country, both in the south and elsewhere. When you say "performance"
are you thinking acting or directing or both? Combined acting/directing program are relatively plentiful, while strictly acting MFA are relatively rare.

Of course you can get suggestions from trusted faculty - and for some systematic reserach of your own you can hit the reference area of the library. Look for Petersen's Guide to Graduate Programs - it comes in both geographic and subject matter versions: so you could, for example, look under "Theatre" and you'll find a listing of every accredited USA
college which offers a graduate degree in theatre - MA, MFA, Ph.D - make your list of what sounds interesting (and I'd suggest that you a) not worry over much about geography: the right program is worth travelling for, b) the quality of a graduate program is not necessarily determined by the fame or prestige of the school based on other factors.

You won't be able to make an informed decision simply from the Petersen's listings - but they'll tell what degrees are offered and, more important, who to contact.

Getting into graduate school is more personal than undergrad: a specific person in the department, "the director of graduate studies" is often the key player: if the department wants you, they can find a way to make it happen.

So get the names of the D.O.G.S. at the school you're interested in and send them an introductory letter - the earlier the better. You needn't make a big pitch - just inform them of where and about when you'll be getting your undergraduate degree, what you are interested in doing on the graduate level and ask for information on their programs and assistantships or other forms of financial aid. One page, probably. That will get you their packet of information - and that will give you a reason to call or write with questions then, perhaps, a vist: make yourself a known quantity.

If you're looking for an assitantship to help pay your way (and most theatre grad students have some form of assistance) then, in effect, you're job hunting: the department is getting a grad student, to be sure, but that's also a form of junior faculty member: they'll want to be sure you can likely succeed academically and show some signs of developable talent, but they'll also want to know that you are steady, dependable, good humored, that you don't wilt under pressure or blow your stack and walk off in a huff if things don't go perfectly. (If they give you an assistantship to teach a section of a class, or to staff their shops, publicity operation or box office, an early departure leaves a hole they can't fill for a semester or two). By the way, assistantships pay a lot better than any undergraduate equivalent you may be thinking of - enough to rent a small apartment, put groceries on the table, buy your supplies and put gas in the car. Not a fortune, but better than minimum wage, usually with your tuition thrown in (although you may still get stuck for fees out of pocket).

At any rate, go ahead and start the process whenever you're ready - a year or two ahead is OK. Assistantship decisions
in most places are made Jan-April; there is often a second round in June.
